The history of bouquets

The most ancient form of arrangement of flowers was the wreath. Wreath was a symbol of gods thanks to its form of a circle that was considered to be the ideal form in Ancient Greece and Rome. Wreaths were the decorations of all holidays. They also decorated temples and streets during important ceremonies. Ancient tiaras and crowns were made of flowers and leaves in the form of a wreath.

Every century changed the aesthetic preferences of people and it influenced the arrangement of flowers. Writers and artists start to claim that flowers look better when they are put in the vase freely and naturally. And this was also an aspect of Christianity that considered the natural beauty to be the best they were against using any luxury accessories.

In the medieval times flowers were the symbols of Christian saints. The general tendency is the use of 1-2 flowers.

And only in the 15th century appears the new form of arrangement of flowers that is called bouquet. In translation from the French it means "a beautiful arrangement of plucked and gathered flowers". And the famous tradition of decorating the bride with a wreath appeared. It meant the purity and innocence of a girl. Bouquets were also used to decorate churches and houses of noble people. Boutonnieres have become famous and people decorated their hair, clothes and accessories with it.

Later different cultural and artistic movements changed each other and every period influenced flowers and bouquets their own way.

It is necessary to mention the appearance of ikebana. It is a Japanese arrangement of flowers. The main principle of it is simplicity and first they were used to decorate temples and as the presents for gods.

Bouquets have a lot of shapes, the most famous is the circle, but they also may be gathered in a form of a rose, pyramid or have irregular shape.

Later posies have become very popular and people began to use them to decorate everything. New accessories were added to them as well as shinning elements.

Nowadays posies made of different flowers of various colours are in fashion.
